Travelling Abroad with Your Pets: What You Need toKnow

Planning a trip abroad and thinking of taking your pet with you? Whether you're relocating, going on an extended holiday, or heading to Europe for a getaway, travelling with pets requires careful planning and the right documentation. At West Ridge Veterinary Practice, we're here to make the process smoother for you and safer for your pet.

Check the Rules for Your Destination

Every country has different entry requirements for animals, so it's essential to research well in advance.  All the information you need can be found using the links on the website here.

Most destinations will require:

  • Microchipping
  • Up-to-date rabies vaccination
  • An Animal Health Certificate (AHC)
  • Parasite treatments, depending on the country
  • Evidence of tapeworm treatment (required for dogs travelling to certain countries)

Some countries have quarantine rules and further disease testing requirements, while others may require a pet passport or import permit—so don’t leave it to the last minute!

Animal Health Certificates (AHC)

Since Brexit, UK-issued pet passports are no longer valid for travel to the EU. Instead, you'll need an AHC issued by an official vet no more than 10 days before travel. The certificate is valid for:

  • Entry into the EU
  • Travel within the EU for up to 4 months from     date of issue
  • Re-entry into the UK for up to 4 months from     date of issue

Your pet must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel if they haven’t been vaccinated already.

Plan Ahead

We recommend contacting us at least one month before your travel date, or longer if travelling outside the EU. This gives us time to check your pet’s vaccination status, administer any necessary treatments, and prepare documentation.

Also, consider your pet’s comfort and safety during the journey. You’ll need:

  • A suitable travel carrier or crate
  • Access to water and ventilation
  • Rest stops for longer road trips
  • A plan for managing anxiety or travel sickness if needed

Returning to the UK

You can re-enter the UK using the AHC issued prior to travel as long as it is within 4 months of the date of issue. When coming back to the UK, dogs must receive a tapeworm treatment 24–120 hours (1-5 days) before re-entry (unless you'rer eturning from a tapeworm-free country). This treatment must be recorded by a vet in your AHC or pet passport.

Is Travelling Right for Your Pet?

Not all pets cope well with travel. Older pets, those with medical conditions, or highly anxious animals may be better off staying with a trusted friend or boarding facility. We’re happy to advise you on the best option for your pet’s wellbeing.
